In the EU, around 87 million people have some form of disability. Among them, the Asociación de Personas con Movilidad Reducida estimates that there are more than 15M owners of EU Blue Badge parking cards for people with reduced mobility, and they often struggle to find accessible parking spots.
Park4Dis is a free mobile app that is currently available in 350 cities across 8 countries. It helps support more than 6,000 drivers and holders of the European disability parking card by locating accessible spots, reporting incidents of interference, and even proposing infrastructural improvements.
With the assistance of Google.Org Fellows, the Asociación de Personas con Movilidad Reducida will create Spot4Dis, which is a series of AI-driven user experience improvements to the existing Park4Dis app. This includes leveraging voice commands, satellite imaging, and detection algorithms to expand upon the existing database of 47,000 accessible parking spots.
These enhancements will not only play an integral role in bolstering the autonomy and inclusion of drivers with reduced mobility, but also help curtail CO2 emissions by reducing transit delays and inefficiencies.
