There is a significant media literacy gap in Czechia. According to a 2022 EU Media & News Survey, only about 18% of Czech respondents felt “very confident” in their ability to recognise disinformation online.
Verifee aims to empower everyday citizens to become more aware of online disinformation by launching a free browser add-on, which leverages natural language processing (NLP) to assess the credibility of visited news articles. The tool analyses over 20 parameters, including clickbait, hate speech, and stereotyping, promptly alerting users to the most problematic elements in an article.
Through partnerships with other non-profits and educational initiatives, Verifee strives to support more than 20,000 Czech citizens annually. The focus is initially on the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach demographics, such as youth, the elderly, and those in rural areas.
