Heat-sensing fire detectors to save lives in Bangladesh

Dense and highly flammable housing wired with hazardous electrical connections and appliances makes fire a major risk for urban settlement dwellers. In the past six months alone, there have been 12 major slum fires in South Asia, resulting in the destruction of more than 3,000 houses and the displacement of more than 60,000 people. This project will help to mitigate the loss of life, housing, and livelihoods that could be caused by fires for 120,000 people living in crowded settlements in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A system of networked heat sensing detectors will provide accurate and timely warning of fires via alarms and text messages to occupants and all nearby residents, enabling an informed and rapid response from newly-organised community and municipal fire response teams.
