Vision disorders cost Australia between $11-12 billion in 2015 yet at least half of cases were either preventable or treatable. Compared with urban Australians, those in rural areas are twice as likely to have never seen an eye care provider and 35% of Aboriginal adults have never had an eye examination. The largest challenge in preventing eye disease is the lack of access to eye care services at doctors’ offices in regional, remote and Aboriginal communities. Vision At Home (V@Home) is a visual acuity self-assessment system that will provide a way for rural, elderly and mobility-affected Australians to test their eyesight without needing to leave their local communities. The system uses simple components, like a webcam and a household object, to calibrate distance and provide robust and accurate visual assessments for as many as 100,000 people over the next 3 years.
