Legal problems become life problems: nearly half of the 8.5 million Australians who experience a legal problem proceed without legal advice, which can lead to financial strain, stress, physical illness, and more. Many of the people in need of legal help can’t afford a lawyer, but are also not eligible for Legal Aid. Traditional methods for triaging these pro bono requests for legal help are cumbersome, confusing, and stressful for clients. The Legal Help Gateway will provide a simple process for people in need of representation across Australia, connecting them with one of more than 10,000 pro bono lawyers based on their specific needs, and serve as a model for countries around the world.
